Choosing an Independent Insurance Agency Over a Direct Writer

So you’ve found the website for Anderson Insurance, and that probably means you’re searching for insurance plans that work for you. As insurance professionals, we understand that committing to an insurance company isn’t an easy task as there are so many different providers and policies out there.

One question that may come to mind while searching for the perfect insurance broker is whether or not you should work with an independent insurance agency such as Anderson Insurance, or a direct writer insurance provider. Since we’re the professionals, let us shed some light on the benefits of choosing an independent insurance agency.

Independent Insurance Agency Vs. Direct Writer Insurance

First, it’d probably be best for us to explain the difference between an independent insurance agent and a direct writer.

An independent insurance agency doesn’t work for a single, specific insurance company. That means that an independent insurance agent works with a variety of companies that offer an array of insurance plans to choose from. Working with an independent insurance agency allows you to have more insurance policies to choose from as well as a higher chance of finding a product that is catered to your needs. Another perk of choosing an independent insurance agent is that you’re more likely to find a better deal. Who doesn’t like saving money?

A direct writer insurance agent is a little different. A direct writer only works and issues insurance policies for one singular company. That means that, if you decide to hire a direct writer, then you’ll only be able to work with that company and no other insurance providers.

An easier way to understand the difference between the two is this: think of when you’re trying to book a hotel for a vacation. Sure, you can easily book your hotel room directly through a property’s website (like using a direct writer), or you could visit a hotel comparison site that offers you various properties and the ability to sort by price, rating, amenities, and more (independent insurance agent).

So who should you choose?

It may seem like we are a little biased considering we are an independent insurance agency, but if you want to be able to establish a relationship with an insurance broker who will help you find the right insurance carrier and policy for you, then you’ll want to consider going with an independent insurance agent. On the other hand, direct writers are captive agents who work with major insurance companies and therefore may not always have your best interests at heart.

Another perk of using an independent insurance agency like Anderson Insurance is that, if you should choose to change your insurance policies down the line, you don’t have to lose the insurance agent that you like working with. Instead of having to reestablish trust with a new broker time after time, you will be able to build a long lasting relationship with an independent agent who will understand your wants and needs. They’ll also help you understand any complex insurance-related information that may be confusing.

What happens if you have trouble filing a claim or dispute, or want to change a policy? If you choose to work with an independent insurance agent, then they can help you do all of those things. Or, if you’re in a situation where you have to challenge a big insurance company for some reason (for example, if they change your insurance rates without notifying you and you don’t understand why), your independent insurance agent can help contact the insurance company and get information. Since direct writers work directly for bigger insurance companies, then they aren’t as likely to help with these types of issues.
